The Nazis continued to use Fraktur extensively on propaganda until 1941 when it was replaced with more readable fonts (oh the irony). Leadership declared Fraktur, a variety of Blackletter, to be “Volk”, i.e. ![]() Blackletter was put back on the scene by Nazis in 1933. It fell out of fashion when Roman typefaces were easier to print with movable type and then was all but written off when the "New Typography" on the block, sans serif, was all the rage. While that approach is intentional, sometimes fonts have associations that may not be on purpose.įor example, what do you think of when you see Blackletter/Gothic style font? Maybe you think of old manuscripts? Or chest tattoos on gang members? Blackletter, also called Old English, was originally used throughout Western Europe from 12th – 17th century. They try to communicate certain values, like trustworthiness, or certain personality traits, like humorous, through the style of the text. Graphic designers often select fonts or typefaces based on the ~vibes~ of a client or company. Simply load the Old English font of your choice into the font generator.
